From 15 – 20 July 2013, all stakeholders involved in Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) from Africa and other regions were gathered in Accra, Ghana for the 6th Africa Agriculture Science week, organised by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and partners. This conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to meet, interact, share experiences and collaborate.
The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) was present at the conference and participated in several side-events, among which were the women and youth session and engagement platforms.
To further strengthen its support and commitment to smallholder farmers under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), FANRPAN signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).
The mission of the AATF is to access, develop, adapt and deliver appropriate agricultural technologies for sustainable use by smallholder farmers in sub-saharan Africa through innovative partnerships and effective stewardship along the entire agriculture value chain.
Through this partnership, FANRPAN aims to foster collaboration and strengthen working relationship with AATF to accelerate Africa’s quest to eradicate poverty, hunger and malnutrition and improve the general well-being of its people.
As mentioned by FANRPAN’s CEO, Dr. Lindiwe Majele Sibanda in the women and youth side event on 15th July 2013, investing in research is crucial for agricultural development and we also need to invest in technologies adapted to the local conditions to that they can be adopted by different actors along the agriculture value chain.
FANRPAN has been supporting and will continue to support the research, adoption and use of technologies in agriculture and hope that this collaboration will further benefit smallholder farmers and other stakeholders in agriculture across the African continent!
