If you have just completed high school or your undergraduate degree and considering to study abroad for your higher studies, be prepared and get your English test done before your sending out your application!
Coming from Mauritius, where the official language is English and the subjects at school are taught in English, one would think that having taken the compulsory Cambridge O Level (written+spoken) and AS level English Exams are enough as “English tests”. But unfortunately, these English exams are recognised at National level only and most Universities outside Mauritius do not accept them!
So, if you intend to apply to a University for an undergraduate or post-graduate degree outside Mauritius, where English language is a requirement, make sure that you register for an English test at least 3 months before you plan to send your University application.
While there are several English tests that you can take, the two most common ones are the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
By going on the website of any of the 2 above mentioned tests, it is quite easy to find a test centre in your country or in a nearby city. The challenge is to get an early date for the test and by the time you do the test and get your score, you might lose some precious opportunities by missing deadlines!
I wish I had this piece of information when I was 18 and had plenty of time to do the test. But better late than never, get yours done now! 🙂
